Roaster's Comment:
This Kenya from Githembe would be one of the most unique Kenyan coffees I've tasted so far. I never expected such strong floral notes from a coffee grown in Kenya, as I'm more used to the typical round, juicy blackcurrant-like flavours that Kenyan coffees are known for. But this one is different.
This coffee was cupped alongside 14 other Kenyan coffees on the table, and it really stood out from the rest. You'd expect clean flavours from a good Kenyan coffee, but what makes this one special is the undeniable aromatics, from the moment you smell it to the finish in the cup.
Honestly, this is the best Kenyan coffee I've tasted so far.
About the Coffee
A major part of the local economy
High in the hills of Kiambu, Kenya, Githembe Coffee Factory sits at around 1,800 m.a.s.l., surrounded by red volcanic soils, native shade trees and smallholder coffee farms. Here, coffee is more than a crop. It is a major part of the local economy, supporting families, schools, jobs and the wider community. The high elevation and steady rainfall give the cherries plenty of time to develop, building the bold character Kenya is known for.
A Classic Kenyan Profile
In the cup, you’re getting a taste of classic Kenyan coffee. The lot brings together four iconic varieties, SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11 and Batian, carefully prepared and slowly sun-dried on raised tables. This traditional process helps preserve their bold, distinctive character and lets each variety shine.
